Hi! My name is Diana Lien and I’m a product design student at the University of Oregon.
This blog will take you through my research, inspirations, and design concepts for the Senior Product Design studio.
Below is the introduction to the theme of the course:
Food
Through the lens of design
Eating food and getting nutrition is a fundamental human need, aside from a matter of taste, food is a reflection of culture, society, tradition, politics, marketing, communication, science, technology, experience, etc. Traditionally farmers grow food, people buy produce and meat from markets; cook them at home, and feed family. However, it doesn’t completely define food cultural patters in the context of modern food.
You are expected to explore food networks with respects to growth, to consumption, to waste from the standpoints below:
- How do we grow food?
- How is food processed to become a product?
- How is food transported?
- How is the food distributed?
- How do we experience food?
- How do we digest food?
- How do we deal with food waste?
- What is the future of food cultures?
Your task as designer is to come up with a proposal or design solution that reflects an understanding of food network processes in context of global and local issues and impacts on people, their physical and social concerns/past events/present realities and future potential.
Project 1: FOOD NETWORK
- Center on an aspect of food network
- Define parameters, problem, strategy
- Research (precedent studies, internet, interiews, and fieldwork): You are required to seek out and work with at least two experts outside of product design. Based on interaction and input, you will develop a design and get feedback on the development of your product
- Proposal, or design solution including (photo, proto-typing, presentation board, short video, etc.
Project 2: FOOD WITH MESSAGE
- Envision new food perceptions
- Collaboration between blogs/students
- begin to generate new food perception
- Record inspirations, and influences
- Build concept with compelling, and bold title
- Be playful, and experimental in application
- Test/apply new food perceptions
Note: This is not a cooking class, however, whatever preparation method you implement, i.e., (baking, cooking, steaming) is required.
This blog is an ideal platform to share my work with others, and keep track of my project in one place. I’ll be entering a global arena with views from a wide segment of society. This blog will be updated with photos, comments, drawings, etc. at least twice a week. I’ll be reflecting on my thoughts, progress, and inspirations with respect to the two projects.
